CWOSSA Winter Championship Update

Statement from Deanna Wehrle, CWOSSA President and Wayne Feeney, CWOSSA Executive Director on Behalf of the CWOSSA Executive.

January 28, 2022

It is unfortunate and disappointing that CWOSSA must share the cancellation of the 2022 Winter Championship Season.

Recognizing the importance of school sport and physical activity, we continue to seek ways to engage students in this way.  The benefits for mental and physical health and well-being are crucial and we support the continuation of activity in ways that support the protocols and guidelines set by local public health units.

In the OFSAA statement, they encouraged “whenever possible, local interschool sports, intramurals and skill development”.  They also encourage local Athletic Associations to schedule competition without the time constraints of CWOSSA or OFSAA Championship dates.  CWOSSA also supports and encourages these opportunities for local Associations  to return to Winter Sports in a manner which follows local protocols and meets local needs.

While this news is disappointing for student-athletes, it is also unfortunate for those who have volunteered their time to stage these events and we are grateful for their passion and commitment.

Plans are moving forward for all CWOSSA Spring Championships beginning with Badminton in April.

We are hopeful that the return to high school sport is in the near future.
